The Premier League have released an explanation of why Manchester United had a goal disallowed against Chelsea.
United went into the game with eyes maybe on the next game to come as they take on Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday night. Chelsea are meanwhile looking to provide a boost to their own Champions League hopes.
For United, it was about going into the final with momentum of a win behind them. And it was almost the perfect start in that sense.
Ruben Amorim's side thought that they had taken the lead in the first half against the Blues at Stamford Bridge when Harry Maguire headed the ball past Robert Sanchez.
However, celebrations were cut short when the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled the goal out. Maguire was adjudged to be in an offside position when the cross was put in.
Following the decision, the Premier League's Match Centre X account explained why the goal was ruled out.
"VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and determined that Maguire was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed." The post read.
Despite images showing the decision was a marginal one, the presence of semi-automated offside made the review quicker than it would have been previously in the season.
While the check was going on the Sky Sports commentary team outlined how close the decision was. "He was on the front foot ready to go and the Chelsea defenders just trying to hold that line," said Alan Smith. "It was a good line just along the edge of the box."
He then added: "That semi-automated is a move for the better, for the good. More accurate."
