Earlier this offseason, the San Antonio Spurs underwent the biggest shift in franchise history. After 29 seasons as the head coach, Gregg Popovich stepped down, and Mitch Johnson was named the next coach.
Popovich is the longest-tenured coach with a single team in NBA history, has more wins than anyone else, and won five titles. He and Tim Duncan are the faces of the franchise, and his name is synonymous with class and excellence.
While he would likely prefer to ride off into the sunset to little fanfare, the city that he means so much to can't help but honor him.
City councilman Manny Pelaez proposed that San Antonio International Airport (SAT) be renamed to Gregg Popovich International Airport.
"Coach Popovich's impact on San Antonio is immeasurable. He has not only brought unparalleled success and recognition to our city through his legendary coaching, but he has also become a deeply respected and admired figure within our community. As our city continues to grow and welcome visitors from around the world through the San Antonio International Airport, we believe it would be a fitting and lasting tribute to dedicate this vital gateway in honor of Coach Gregg Popovich. Renaming the airport to 'Gregg Popovich International Airport' would serve as a constant reminder of his extraordinary legacy and the positive impact he has had on our city and beyond." -Manny Pelaez
Pelaez only has days left in his term, but it's safe to say that if the resolution passes, it will be the defining moment of his tenure in local politics, and it's hard to imagine anyone voting no on the movement.
