Joel Ward’s last hurrah: Crystal Palace captain to be involved at Wembley

Earlier this week, the 35-year-old announced he will depart the club at the end of the season, bringing a close to his 13-year stay in south London.

Despite playing only 12 minutes of football this term, Palace boss Oliver Glasner named Ward on the bench for last month’s semi-final triumph over Aston Villa.

And, as the club captain bids farewell to the Palace support, he will reclaim his spot on the bench when the Eagles compete in the FA Cup final for the third time in their history.

Although Ward has not played in the competition this season, he is likely to receive one of the 40 medals allocated to the club for being part of the final squad, regardless of whether he receives minutes.

Tomorrow’s trip to Wembley will be his sixth and final visit to the national stadium in red and blue, as he becomes the only player in the club’s history to reach two FA Cup finals.

His previous visits include Palace’s play-off final victory to earn Premier League promotion in 2013, FA Cup semi-final wins over Watford and Aston Villa, and the 2016 final defeat to Manchester United.

“Yes,” said Glasner when asked if Ward would be involved at Wembley.

Announcing that he will leave the club at the end of the season, Ward said: “It’s been a huge privilege to wear this shirt, to represent this club.

“It’s been an incredible journey with so many fond memories, so many incredible moments – moments that will live on in my mind for the rest of my life.

“Obviously, I came from somewhere else. But I’ve been a part of this club and a part of the furniture for so long that I’d like to think I’m part of the family.

"This isn’t ‘goodbye’ – it’s merely a ‘see you later.”
