“OK, so real quick: The Knicks are in the playoffs, and they could advance to the next round if they win their game against the Celtics tonight,” Jonas said in a video on Instagram Stories on Wednesday, May 14.

What does he have to do with their success? “During rehearsals for The Last Five Years, I said to our director, ‘I really think Jamie,’ my character, ‘should be a New York basketball fan.’ And she was like, ‘Great. What team?’ " he recalled.

“And I was like, ‘Well, hmm…good question, what team?’ And eventually we decided to make Jamie a Knicks fan,” he explained.

“So I’m not saying that the Knicks are in the playoffs and could potentially go to the next round because of The Last Five Years and because of this,” he teased. “But coincidence? I think not.”

The team did not secure the win on Wednesday, but they have another chance to advance on Saturday, May 17.

On opening night of the production, Nick told PEOPLE that he was dealing with some nerves.

"The thing for me is there are a lot of people who love this show, who have played these roles in different productions, their high school or college or whatever. And it's those folks who have done it that I feel most intimidated to do it for," he explained, adding, "But I think that's the beauty of storytelling and being an artist and an actor, is that you get to take big risks and put yourself out there. And I love it."

Jonas continued, saying, "As intimidating as it might feel sometimes, I think it's a really gratifying experience to get out and really put yourself out there and take big swings and see what happens."

Tickets to The Last Five Years are now on sale.
