NBA Executive Reveals Thoughs on Wemby and Giannis Playing on Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are the team to watch this offseason. With the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Spurs could add an elite young talent next to Victor Wembanyama, although the Silver and Black have been linked to some premier trade targets.

With a war chest of assets, the Spurs could add any trade candidate they want this offseason, with the most talented being far and away Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The two-time MVP is a finalist to win his third Michael Jordan Trophy this season, and after another disappointing first-round exit, he could be traded from the Milwaukee Bucks.

While the Spurs would have to give up the farm to land him, the result would be electric.

“If the Spurs paired Giannis and Wemby, they would be the favorite to win the title next year,” one Eastern executive told The Athletic. “They’d have two guys who might be top-five players in the league next year on the same team. Plus, they fit. They’d have a dominant defense that no one would be able to score against inside, and they’d have the ability to play five-out in an even more devastating way than the Bucks did with Brook Lopez if they surrounded Giannis and Wemby with the right wings.”

A trio of De'Aaron Fox, Giannis, and Wemby would ruin the league, although the long-term viability of keeping three max players on the roster is questionable.

The Spurs, after a few seasons, would have to commit 90 percent of the salary cap to their big three, and building through depth seems to work better than by amassing as many superstars as possible.

Just look at the Phoenix Suns compared to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder have stars, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is their only true superstar.

Is winning one title better than having a shot at winning several? That's up to the front office to decide.
