Manchester United fans have accused Ruben Amorim of making a 'sackable statement' after the Red Devils lost 1-0 against Chelsea on Friday night. It was United's eighth league game in a row without a win, while they are now guaranteed to finish at least 40 points behind fierce rivals Liverpool – the biggest chasm between the two clubs in history.
But that wasn't the only nadir they discovered on yet another night that showed the Old Trafford outfit have a mountain to climb and only shovels in hand. This season has now seen the club pick up their least points in a Premier League campaign, tally the least wins, suffer the most defeats, and score their fewest amount of goals – a record-breaker for all the wrong reasons.
Amorim knew he was stepping into mission impossible back in November, and it didn’t take him long before dubbing his current squad the worst Man United team of all time. But it’s his comments about one forlorn player that have drawn the ire of his supporters this week, as nobody can quite wrap their heads - or hearts - around his unwavering faith in Rasmus Hojlund.

Amorim Slammed For Showing Continued Faith In Rasmus Hojlund

Following his 90-minute cameo at Stamford Bridge - where he didn't take a single shot at goal and fluffed his only dribble attempt - Hojlund has now managed just four goals in 31 Premier League outings this term. Yet, despite also losing possession 13 times and coming out second best in nine of his 11 duels, Amorim continues to show a puzzling level of faith in him.
In fact, he even went so far as to praise the striker during his post-match interview on Friday night, pointing to signs of improvement, despite the Denmark international being the lowest-rated player on the pitch. His manager said:
"He fights for every ball, loses a lot of duels, wins some duels, he needs to improve the connection. He's improving, I'm really happy with him, he just needs to continue to work hard."
After costing the Red Devils an initial £64 million from Atalanta in 2023, any attempted praise of their underperforming striker this season feels like polishing a ghost - trying to find shine where there hasn’t even been a shadow, at least in the eyes of United supporters. This was echoed on social media when one X user was quick to comment:
"That’s a sackable statement."
A second user wrote: "This is madness and is why Ruben isn’t fit to be the Manchester United manager," while a third added: "If Amorim is truly happy with The Dud then I’m sorry but he deserves sacking this summer. Really low standards."
A fourth then concluded: "Sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut. I’ve watch every single game this season and Hojlund is not improving. It’s 10 against 11 every time he’s on the pitch."
