Whilst there will be plenty of incoming players and new faces coming to Newcastle this summer, we can also expect an equally big amount of departures from the club as well.
From players nearing the end of their contract to deals that we simply can’t turn down, some talent may have already played their final games for the club.
But in the case of a certain Callum Wilson, this summer may mark the end of his time at Newcastle United – but not the Premier League…
Wilson linked with Leeds switch
Callum Wilson is one of several Mags facing an uncertain future in what could be a summer of change at Newcastle United.
But the former England international is set to be offered a Premier League career lifeline at Leeds United, according to a new report.
The Sun’s Charlie Wyett claims that Daniel Farke’s side are keen to bring the 33-year-old to Elland Road in a bid to bring some Premier League experience to their ranks.
They’ll be looking to avoid becoming the next casualty in the widening game between the Championship and the top flight, where all three promoted sides have been relegated for the last two seasons.
Though Leeds have a reported £100m transfer kitty to spend in the upcoming window, it’s expected we’ll lose Wilson on a free transfer, unless the club activate an option to extend his current deal by 12 months.
Wilson isn’t the first player linked with a move from the North East to Yorkshire in the summer, as both Sean Longstaff and Nick Pope have been touted as potential transfers for Leeds.
And from a squad development and financial perspective, it could make sense for us to part ways with a few of these players.
Our active search for a new keeper to compete with Pope for the No.1 spot hints that the former Burnley man is entering the twilight of his Toon career.
Longstaff has fallen down the midfield hierarchy, though the demands of European and domestic cup football could warrant him staying for the sake of squad depth.
But for Wilson, his persistent injury issues, coupled with a lack of any goalscoring form in the Premier League, regrettably make him a prime candidate to see go this summer.
Although there have been talks of potentially triggering a one year extension to his contract, the presence of Will Osula and a rumoured new striker make Wilson’s chances of being the no.2 choice behind Alexander Isak very slim.
