Leeds United front-runners to land bargain 88-goal PL striker - talkSPORT

Leeds United are claimed to be front-runners in the pursuit of Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson, who is out of contract this summer.

Joel Piroe collected the golden boot for a 19-goal Championship campaign that helped the Whites to the league title at the start of this month, but it’s largely agreed that more firepower will be required to stave off instant relegation.

The calibre of signing Leeds end up making remains to be seen, but it might be in the club’s interest to pursue players in multiple positions that boast vast Premier League experience.

Leeds United front-runners to sign Callum Wilson for free from Newcastle United

The free agent market in the Premier League could be an avenue worth exploring for Leeds in the coming months, adding seasoned top flight experience without having to pay the typical fees.

TalkSPORT have now reported that Leeds are at the front of the queue to sign Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson, who is currently due to see his contract expire in the summer.

The 33-year-old has struggled with injury issues in the past two seasons with Alexander Isak taking the mantle as first-choice striker at St James’ Park, but boasts 88 goals and 25 assists in 237 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle’s stance on the striker is that he is free to leave in search of regular playing time elsewhere, with Leeds claimed to be first in line to make the signing.

Would Callum Wilson be a shrewd signing for Leeds United?

If Wilson were to stay fit for the full season, he’d be an immense signing for Leeds, but if that was a guarantee, Newcastle wouldn’t be letting him leave for free.

He’s still got what it takes to be a viable option in the top flight, and could add the experience and focal point we need to get points in the Premier League.

The main issues with Wilson are his ability to stay fit consistently, and the wages that come with signing him – two things we can’t afford to totally risk.
