Mark Clattenburg addresses'bizarre situation'with Man Utd star in Chelsea game he has never seen before

Manchester United fell to their 18th Premier League defeat of the season at the hands of Chelsea on Friday night.

The 2024/25 Premier League went from bad to worse for Manchester United as they lost 1-0 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Although all eyes are on the Europa League final against Tottenham, it’s been hard to watch Manchester United lose so many games in the league and struggle to score goals.

It’s been a completely different story in Europe with United unbeaten in the Europa League after reaching the final.

In United’s last outing, Marc Cucurella scored the only goal to secure three points for Chelsea’s push to qualify for the Champions League. The Red Devils managed to come away from Stamford Bridge without any fresh injuries, which was the priority going into the game.

However, referee Chris Kavanagh was kept busy on the night.

United were given six yellow cards and Chelsea had a penalty shout overruled by VAR. There was also an incident at the beginning of the second half that made Rasmus Hojlund laugh.

Mark Clattenburg amazed by Rasmus Hojlund incident

Just five minutes into the second half, play had to be brought to a halt due to an unexpected wardrobe malfunction.

Hojlund appeared from the dressing room at half-time wearing a fitness tracker before the referee told him to remove it.

The Denmark international saw the funny side as he removed the device whilst trying to hold in his laughter.

Speaking to United in Focus about the incident, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg explained that Hojlund is not permitted to wear a fitness tracker in competitive matches.

“This is a bizarre situation and first time I have seen a player wearing a fitness tracker in a match,” Clattenburg said. “This is not allowed under players equipment in the laws of the game and when seen by the match official, he must leave the field and have it removed.

“In my time as a referee, I have had players putting jewellery down their sock and then putting it on during the game and when seen, they are told to remove it.”

What other Man Utd players wore fitness trackers?

Hojlund’s incident is not the first of its kind at United.

In 2021, Axel Tuanzebe was spotted wearing a device on his wrist during a Premier League game against Leicester City.

It was later revealed that Tuanzebe was wearing a Whoop fitness tracker.

Tuanzebe got away with it on the day, but Kavanagh wasn’t letting Hojlund off the hook.
