Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has revealed he will return to Anfield to see his old club lift the Premier League title next weekend. The Reds clinched the title in style at a jubilant Anfield with a thumping 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last month.

Arne Slot’s side take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night before welcoming Crystal Palace to Anfield next weekend. Following the conclusion of that game, the Reds will be presented with the title.

And Agger has revealed that he will be making an emotional return to Anfield as he simply had to be there to witness his old club lift the title.

“I just have to go over and feel the atmosphere, be in the stadium and see them lift the trophy,” he revealed to Tipsbladet, via Sport Witness.

Agger made 232 appearances and scored 14 times for Liverpool during a spell of more than eight years at Anfield that began when he joined from Brondby in January 2006.

He retired in 2016 after a career which also saw him captain his country as a player, however he remains a popular figure with the club's supporters.

And reflecting on his move and his time at Anfield, the former Denmark international admitted: “It went pretty fast, but I also had several other clubs interested.

“I actually tried to keep my focus on Brøndby, where things were going really well.

“I didn’t think much about it at first, but when it got closer and I suddenly had to talk to the coach (Rafael Benitez), I could tell it felt right.

“They had just been to the Champions League final and won it, and then I had a good conversation with Benitez, and he expressed that he wanted to invest in me. That’s a very good start.”
