Jeremie Frimpong is set to join Liverpool after agreeing terms on a five-year contract. Liverpool will now trigger the Leverkusen right-back’s €35m release clause, which is seen as excellent value by the club, and become Arne Slot's first summer signing.
Liverpool have had Frimpong on their radar since last summer when they first approached Leverkusen, but outgoing boss Xabi Alonso persuaded the 24-year-old to stay another year.
Frimpong was sold on a move to Liverpool long before Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future was clear. He will now replace the Madrid-bound England international, but still faces competition from the highly-rated Conor Bradley, who on Saturday signed a new four-year contract at Liverpool.
Although negotiations proved both smooth and speedy, Frimpong also has had serious interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Manchester United over the past 18 months.

GMS understands that what stood out to Frimpong about Liverpool was his conversation with Arne Slot and the sporting team, and the long-term project on offer. Liverpool made it clear to Frimpong they saw him as a key piece, even telling him he was their first-choice signing almost a year before the deal was done.
Frimpong has made 190 appearances for Leverkusen since joining from Celtic in 2020, and was an integral part of the Leverkusen side that won the 2023/24 Bundesliga without losing a game.
Frimpong is not merely a wing-back, and that is part of the appeal to Liverpool. He has played significant minutes as a traditional right back. Both Frimpong and Liverpool view him as a right-back with attacking qualities, capable of thriving in a back four and committed to improving defensively.
Frimpong’s defensive game has already matured hugely, and he now works with dedicated coaches off the pitch to sharpen his positioning, decision-making, and one-vs-one defending.
When running data on Frimpong, Liverpool also noted his goals and assists have ranked among the top full-backs in Europe over the past few seasons.
Jeremie Frimpong's statistics for Bayer Leverkusen vs Liverpool
Frimpong also boasts impressive stamina. At Leverkusen, he had standout numbers in high-intensity running, recovery sprints and total distance covered. He prides himself on being physically relentless.
Liverpool place heavy emphasis on not just a footballer's talent, but their character as well. Frimpong comes from humble beginnings. He is one of seven siblings, raised by hardworking parents with very limited means. As a kid, he had to ask for lifts just to get to training and since then has always looked to give back. His mum still donates to charities across Ghana and the UK on his behalf.
Frimpong's football journey is unique. He he was born in the Netherlands, but moved to England when young. He was eligible to play for England prior to commiting to the Netherlands, for whom he has now won 12 caps.

Frimpong's Personality and Off-Pitch Activities
He regularly works with individual coaches
Jeremie Frimpong
He spent his youth career at Manchester City before making a bold switch as a teenager to Celtic in 2019, where he'd go on to win the 2019/20 domestic treble. Frimpong wanted to come out of his comfort zone and gain minutes.
Off the pitch, Frimpong is a big game and anime fan, using both to unwind after training and games. He is also an animal lover and owns a dog called Maru who is very much part of his family. And Frimpong has recently started reading as he looks to learn and unplug from screens. He is into both self-development books and plain old fiction.
But above all else, Frimpong is detail-driven, on and off the field. He works with individual coaches to improve his technical, tactical and physical development and believes there is always room to improve. Liverpool agree and, like they did with Alexis Mac Allister back in 2023 for a cut-price £35m, believe signing Frimpong for just €35m will prove one of the bargains of the summer.
