Mason Greenwood clears up Marseille future amid transfer links, amid potential Man Utd sell-on jackpot

One of the biggest pros from Ineos’ time at Manchester United is their ability to strike good deals for the football club in the transfer market.

Many of those moved on by Ineos were sold with sell-on or buyback clauses.

That ensures that Manchester United can make even more money from these players down the line.

Ineos are already trying to generate funds through cost-cutting strategies at Old Trafford, but they could also make extra money from deals struck last summer.

For example, Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille included a 50% sell-on clause, which could come in very useful this summer.

Greenwood has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia after enjoying an impressive campaign in Ligue 1, despite having some complications with manager Roberto Zerbi.

The United academy graduate isn’t alone when it comes to former players who could move on this and pocket more money for the Red Devils.

Real Madrid are interested in Alvaro Fernandez, even though the left-back was overlooked by Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. A transfer this summer would benefit United financially.

Mason Greenwood has big plan next season

Despite being linked with a transfer, Greenwood has made it no secret that he wants to stay at Marseille after settling down with his girlfriend and child.

Greenwood joined Marseille for around £26 million last summer following a one-year loan spell with La Liga side Getafe.

The forward had no future at United before being sent on his way following allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. Those charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.

Now, Greenwood has resurrected his career in France, helping Marseille to qualify for the Champions League.

Greenwood stresses that he plans to compete in the Champions League next season at Marseille and has no intentions to leave the club.

“I hope to be here next year for the Champions League,” said Greenwood at a press conference. “All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it’s been a very positive season, we’ve reached our objective.

“I feel at home here. I recently had a baby here with my girlfriend. Not a lot of people get to experience that kind of thing here, and with all my teammates and coaches, I would like to thank them all.”

At this point, it’s up to Marseille whether they wish to cash in on Greenwood or keep him at the club for another season.
