Palace won the first trophy in their history with a 1-0 win against Manchester City
Who let Pep Guardiola’s side down and who were the south London’s team’s heroes?
Crystal Palace
Dean Henderson
“England’s No1” the fans sang. Got away with red card but what a penalty save to deny Marmoush and further stops from Haaland, Gvardiol and Doku. 9
Chris Richards
Seemed to get his head on everything that City pumped into the penalty area. He bravely blocked shots and got an important foot in dangerous areas. 9
Maxence Lacroix
Strong presence in the middle of a back-three defence, coming face-to-face with Haaland. Excellent first season in English football and will attract other clubs soon. 7
Marc Guehi
So calm in Palace’s back line and was excellent with his positioning, allowing him to intercept without throwing himself into tackles. Forced off injured after hour mark. 7
Daniel Muñoz
Opened his legs and sprinted down the right for the Eze goal, showing composure for the delivery after a 40-yard dash. Goal ruled out in the second half. 8
Adam Wharton
Kept ball moving in Palace’s central positions, an important part of how they functioned in transitions by moving the ball quickly. Would look at home in a Pep Guardiola team. 8
Daichi Kamada
Vital block to deny Bernardo when through on goal and also provided a threat from the other end with shots from long range. Has been a superb free transfer. 7
Tyrick Mitchell
Rash challenge on Bernardo for penalty but bailed out by Henderson. Discipline, dropping into a back five at times, and focus was on shape rather than surging forward. 6
Ismaila Sarr
Chance at near post saved in the first half and was a threat to City with his running to support Mateta. Unlucky that ball flicked off him for offside goal. 6
Eberechi Eze
Has now scored in his last five games − his form is unreal. Like his recent goal, was calmness personified when the cross came his way. 8
Jean-Philippe Mateta
Held ball up for the goal and brought Munoz into the game − classic centre-forward play. Tireless and selfless, he did the jobs of a No 9 efficiently. 7
Substitutes
Jefferson Lerma (for Guehi 61) Eddie Nketiah (for Mateta 78) Will Hughes (for Wharton 87) Subs not used Turner, Ward, Clyne, Esse, Chilwell, Devenny.
Manchester City
Stefan Ortega
No chance with the goal, which was central but he had to cover his near post for the cross. Big call to stick with him in goal from the semi-final rather than recall Ederson. 5
Manuel Akanji
Beaten for the Eze goal, with the Palace forward quicker than him and nipping in front. There was not much in the way of supporting his forwards with runs down the flank. 5
Ruben Dias
Tried to bring the ball out of defence and start attacks but Palace were disciplined with shape out of possession. Dealing with Mateta when Eze scored. 5
Josko Gvardiol
Head clash with Mateta in first 30 seconds set up a big battle. He also had a header saved and was a threat in the Palace area. 5
Nico O’Reilly
Started at left-back but joined midfield when City had the ball − although struggled to be a creative force in that forward role. 5
Bernardo Silva
Also had defensive duties as Guardiola did not pick an orthodox defensive-midfielder. Did well with his dribble that earned the penalty − but it was saved. 6
Kevin De Bruyne
Was in a deeper role than usual and while he got on the ball and picked some passes, it was difficult for him to penetrate the Palace defence. 5
Savinho
Chosen by Guardiola to add pace to his attack but struggled to get on the ball − let alone behind the Palace back line. Subbed later in the game. 4
Omar Marmoush
Penalty saved and it was a good height for Henderson, even if it was well struck. Another one taken off in the second half. The spot-kick was his big chance and others were difficult to come by. 4
Jeremy Doku
Huge threat to Palace by cutting in from the left and curling with his right foot. That was his route to goal rather than getting behind Munoz. 6
Erling Haaland
Early volley at far post saved, then looked like he was taking penalty before handing ball to Marmoush. Looked like getting on end of crosses but ball would not fall for him. 4
Substitutes
Claudio Echeverri (for Marmoush 76) Phil Foden (for Savinho 76) Ilkay Gundogan (for Bernardo 88 ) Subs not used Ederson, Grealish, Gonzalez, Vitor Reis, Khusanov, Matheus Nunes.
