Report: Newcastle could use one of their slowest players to try and sign 'totally unique'…

Newcastle United are just one of the clubs interested in a move for Southampton’s Tyler Dibling.

Dibling has emerged as a rare bright spot in an otherwise dreadful season for Southampton and Newcastle United are keen.

Newcastle have wanted to sign Dibling for years and the fact the Saints have been relegated could make things easier. Big things are expected of the 19-year-old, who has scored two goals while registering one assist in 32 Premier League games this season.

Still, such is the excitement around the player, the Toon aren’t alone with their interest. Manchester United also want to sign Dibling, and could move for him if they win the Europa League.

Speaking to BBC Sport, former Southampton U21 manager Adam Asghar said of Dibling: “He’s totally unique to anything I’ve seen before. He’s got raw physicality, pace and power, is an unbelievable ball-carrier and is always impacting games.”

Now, it seems Newcastle have a plan in mind when it comes to trying to sign him.

Newcastle United prepared to use Matt Targett to sign Tyler Dibling

Matt Targett could reportedly be used in part-exchange.

Members of the Newcastle squad think Targett is their slowest player and his first-team chances look limited under Eddie Howe.

According to The Chronicle, the defender could be offered back to Southampton – his hometown club – as part of a deal to sign Dibling this summer.

Targett is paid around £100k-per-week at Newcastle and still has a year to run on his contract at St James’ Park.

For his part, the 29-year-old is said to be happy to stay on Tyneside and fight for his place.

Tyler Dibling’s stats for Southampton in the Premier League

Is Newcastle United transfer target Tyler Dibling worth £100million?

Southampton reportedly valued Dibling at £100million, which feels steep to say the very least.

While clearly a talented player and someone full of potential, it’s hard to imagine anyone actually paying that.

Tyler Dibling has completed more successful dribbles than any other teenager in the Premier League this season (40).

Dibling has been compared to Newcastle legend Paul Gascoigne but has only played one full season in the Premier League.

Saints are certainly right to value him highly and seemingly won’t be pushed around in the transfer market despite their relegation, but expecting anyone to pay £100m for the teenager feels ambitious.

That’s not to say he can’t go on to put himself in that kind of bracket but, right now, it feels unlikely.
