As far as pep talks go, few come bigger than from Sir Alex Ferguson – but Diamonds skipper Adam Frizzell was too intimidated to approach the Manchester United and Scotland legend.
Sir Alex was a surprise guest at New Broomfield as Airdrie and Cove Rangers scrapped out a 0-0 draw in their Championship play-off final, with the Diamonds going through courtesy of Wednesday’s 2-1 win at the Balmoral Stadium.
The Old Trafford favourite was in the tunnel pre-game, and Frizzell said: “Sir Alex was in the tunnel and I was too nervous to go and speak to him!

“But aye, I can’t believe he was here today.

“A few boys got a photo with him, and it was quite cool that he came to this game.
“Sir Alex has been a speaker at some Airdrie functions in the past, but it’s mental, for me he’s probably, in my opinion, the greatest ever manager, so to have him at the game is wild.

“I hope he was doing a bit of scouting for Man U, and we’ve got a chance [of a move] in the summer!
“I don’t think you need a booster for a game like that, the boys were right up for, it, maybe even a bit too much in our performance – I thought we were a bit uptight, but that just shows how much the boys care.”
