In-demand Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has penned an emotional farewell message to Xabi Alonso amid Liverpool transfer interest in the winger. The Reds are one of three clubs named in a four-way tug-of-war for the Germany international.

Bayern Munich and Manchester City have been named as competitors to Arne Slot's side for the 22-year-old's signature. It has been reported that a cross-Bundesliga move is most likely with the German champions keen to acquire the key Leverkusen man.

Wirtz played in their final game of the season against Mainz on Saturday, but failed to inspire them to a win in Xabi Alonso's final match, while Jeremie Frimpong was an unused substitute with his move to the Reds looming closer.

Alonso is facing increasing speculation over replacing Carlo Ancelotti as Real Madrid manager with the Italian heading onto the international stage with Brazil.

The Spaniard helped guide Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga crown last term during an unprecedented campaign where they went the entire season unbeaten, winning the German cup but losing in the Europa League final to Atalanta.

Wirtz penned a farewell message to Alonso amid interest from Liverpool with uncertainty beginning to grow around his own future at the BayArena.

"Thank you for everything coach," he posted to Instagram.

"It was a pleasure to play for you and was always fun to come to training. Thanks for helping me to get on another level.

"You’re not just a great manager but also a fantastic person!

"We shared so many unforgettable memories that will always stay in my head and heart.

"Wish you all the best for your next chapter!"

Reports and rumours are ramping up over interest from Bayern and City.

It was previously claimed that Liverpool had moved ahead of their Premier League rivals in the chase to sign Wirtz but still trailed the German giants.

There were further claims that City were casting their attention to Spain for Barcelona star Dani Olmo.

Chiefs at the Allianz Arena have been forced to address the speculation regarding Wirtz after claims suggested there was a verbal agreement in place, reports which were rubbished by German media.

Club president Uli Hoeness said: "What can I tell you now?

"You've been writing nonsense for weeks about him going to Manchester City, even though he was at Liverpool.

"We'll provide you with facts at some point, not more speculation!"
