Erling Haaland during the Emirates FA Cup final between Crystal Palace and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium
A dejected Erling Haaland during the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Crystal Palace
Erling Haaland's Wembley goal drought goes on after a frustrating FA Cup final defeat for Manchester City compounded a miserable season.
With the talk going into this final about whether the FA Cup would make City's season a success, defeat to Crystal Palace ensures it definitely isn't one. Eberechi Eze's first half goal and Dean Henderson's penalty save from Omar Marmoush were the defining moments in another afternoon where possession didn't equate to goals for the Blues.
Their full-time reactions told the whole story and City must now pick themselves up before Tuesday's huge Premier League clash against Bournemouth with Champions League qualification still at stake.
These are the moments you may have missed from the FA Cup final:
Haaland and De Bruyne fume at full time
When the final whistle went and the Crystal Palace end erupted to celebrate their deserved win, City were stunned. Josko Gvardiol slumped to the turf and stayed there as red and blue shirts celebrated around him, losing his second final in as many years.
Haaland froze on the halfway line and remained static for a long time, staring at the Palace fans. Then he turned to the City end without moving from his spot. Gradually he wandered back with the City players as they gathered in their own half but kept himself away from his teammates and was not in the mood for an inquest.

He had questioned City's hunger before the game when reflecting on the season and called it a 'horrible', 'boring' campaign. He spoke about the contrasting standards in the squad while his own wait for a Wembley goal extends to six blanks and eight finals without scoring.
For Kevin De Bruyne this was meant to be his glorious farewell but a deeper role and poor performance was a disappointing end to his glorious association with Wembley. He looked to be storming down the tunnel only to grab some water, and then embark on a personal lap of honour around the City end with fans offering a generous applause back.
Guardiola was furious with Dean Henderson after his controversial VAR reprieve in the first half, with most of the City squad stone-faced as they waited to receive their silver medals, watch the trophy lift and get out of Wembley as quickly as possible.
Echeverri's debut
A surprise inclusion in the matchday squad was Claudio Echeverri - the 2024 signing for £12.5m who moved permanently to Manchester in January. He has impressed in training but this was his first appearance on the bench - and even more unexpectedly a club debut in the FA Cup final.
With City chasing the game, Echeverri was brought on ahead of Jack Grealish and Ilkay Gundogan, replacing Omar Marmoush in the latest strange Guardiola decision in the final. His introduction generated big cheers from supporters who have wanted to see him for months - just maybe not like this.
The Argentine slipped within ten seconds of coming on but was alert in his cameo and always looking to run off the shoulder of the defender. That saw him spotted by De Bruyne and Echeverri eyed a cup final debut goal, only for Palace hero Henderson to deny him.
When Echeverri clipped a cross over Erling Haaland's head as the clock ticked over 90 minutes, Guardiola had his head in his hands - and again when the youngster danced into a shooting position but the chance was blocked.
Guardiola's chat with O'Reilly
In a team selection that raised more questions than answers, one of the less contentious selections was Nico O'Reilly at left-back.
It's a remarkable end to the season from a player not expecting to play a minute in pre-season, who made his senior debut at Wembley in defensive midfield against Manchester United, and single-handedly dragged City through the fifth and sixth rounds of this competition.
But he's been a revelation at left-back and deservedly kept his place on an afternoon where two other FA Cup mainstays this season from the academy were ruthlessly discarded from the squad.
Before the match, Pep Guardiola took O'Reilly to one side to issue some instructions during the warm-up - and O'Reilly was involved straight away moving into midfield and joining the all-out-attack formation. In the second half when City were running out of time, a stoppage in play allowed Guardiola to call over O'Reilly, Jeremy Doku and Josko Gvardiol for a chat where he was animated but appeared to be letting his players solve the problems themselves.
In the same pause, captains Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva came together for a quick chat before the restart, seemingly motivating themselves for a final push.
City fans make themselves heard
Just like the semi-final, City fans were facing an opposition allocation on their biggest day in years. Palace fans made the most of a rare appearance at Wembley with a smoke display from the stands that laughed at the big screen warnings about not bringing pyrotechnics into the stadium.
They were good value - as you would expect from a fanbase who pride themselves on their atmosphere, and were given plenty to sing about with their first half goal and penalty save.

From a City point of view, all the action was up the other end and despite dominating they were behind and struggling. In the second half, however, the fans did what they could to urge their team on - when a stoppage in play slowed down the action, Blue Moon rang around Wembley.
