Callum Wilson is out of contract at Newcastle United this summer following a frustrating campaign.
Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a summer swoop for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson.
Signed five years ago from Bournemouth for £20million, the Toon ace has been an important figure at St James’ Park in recent years. Wilson answered Newcastle’s call for a Premier League goalscorer and assumed the No.9 shirt in his second season.
His goals were vital towards keeping the Magpies afloat during the latter Mike Ashley years. When reunited with former manager Eddie Howe on Tyneside, Wilson continued to find the net to secure Champions League football two years ago.
However, injuries have derailed his Newcastle career and Alexander Isak is now the undisputed first-choice striker at St James’ Park. Wilson turned 33 in February and has not scored a top-flight goal all season.
The Magpies were understood to have a clause that could trigger a one-year extension but it is unclear whether that has expired. As it stands, Wilson will leave Newcastle for nothing on June 30 - allowing other clubs to pounce.
Leeds United tempted to offer Callum Wilson escape
Leeds have been linked with the 33-year-old as they aim to stabilise in the Premier League. Daniel Farke reportedly has a transfer war chest worth over £100million but Wilson would provide top-flight experience at a discount.
The Whites have already targeted Sean Longstaff - valued by transfermarkt.com at £20million - for a cut-price fee as he also enters a precarious stage of his contract. A double deal involving Wilson could be mutually beneficial to both parties.
Callum Wilson honest on ‘mixed’ season
Wilson was brutally honest about his 2024-25 campaign before the clash against Chelsea. He told the matchday programme: “For me, it’s been a mixed campaign. As a collective, it’s been one of the best campaigns and teams I’ve been a part of. Yet individually, it’s been one of my worst seasons.
“I haven’t scored in the Premier League this season, which for me is unheard of. But I know there’s a goal in there somewhere. You have to be ready to grasp your opportunity when it comes and I am certain that over the next three games I will have a big part to play. It’s written in the stars in the stars for me to put one in the back of the net.”
Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson future
Speaking earlier this month, Howe insisted Wilson remained part of his plans. He told reporters: “He's very much in my plans going forward. We have four games to go and he's a huge part of that.
“I think he's looked better and better in recent weeks. You have to understand Callum probably has been going through a pre-season sort of in the shop window, as in on the pitch, which is very difficult to do. But he needed the sort of the training and the game exposure to get back to his very best form. I think he's getting there now.
“I think physically, I see the Callum Wilson of old. So good signs for him. And he has stayed fit for a long period of time, which has been brilliant to see. And I think that on his long-term future, let's wait and see. Let's wait and see how he performs and how he continues to look."
