Aston Villa could be set to make a big-money sale over the coming weeks as they look to avoid a spending breach.

The West Midlands giants have faced profit and sustainability (PSR) issues over the past couple of years after spending close to the allowable losses limit, with top-flight clubs only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Villa posted a club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their turnover increased from £217.7million in 2022-23 to £275.7million, while their losses fell from £119.6million to £85.4million.

Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman all moved on before last year’s accounting deadline to help them avoid a spending breach.

Villa are exploring selling stakes in their women’s team to help them comply with the spending rules.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to owners BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for last season.

In a new development, The Times reported on 14 May Alexis Ohanian, the husband of tennis star Serena Williams, has bought an eight per cent stake in Chelsea Women for £20million.

The Blues are now the most expensive women’s team in the world, with a value of £225million that is set to rise to £245million.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider it’s “obvious” Villa are now going to sell a stake in their women’s team.

Aston Villa facing PSR issues after new twist

Borson insisted Villa have “shown their hand” as a sale is now on the cards at Villa Park.

He told Football Insider: “They are going to do something with the women’s team now, aren’t they?

“I mean, it’s just obvious. There was talk about it before, but if the game is that you can sell off 10 per cent of the women’s team and you can fill the PSR gap, then you are going to do that.

“The only thing about the women’s team trick is it doesn’t work for you for Uefa purposes.

“I’d say that Villa have shown their hand now that they do need to do something in June, whether it be the women’s team or PSR sales.

“But I think they’ve shown that they do need to do something, and then I think that a lot of the decisions that will flow from that will depend on whether they can get the Champions League.”

Aston Villa line up replacements for star players

Former Villa Park senior scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Villa are working on signing replacements for Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Ollie Watkins ahead of the summer transfer window.

Unai Emery and his recruitment team have already started working behind the scenes to identify new signings.

Villa are believed to be prepared to sell key players this summer, with Watkins attracting interest from other Premier League clubs.
