Gary Lineker has just one edition of Match of the Day left to present before leaving the show at the end of the season after 26 years.
The Leicester icon announced earlier this season that he was standing down from his role on the show at the end of the current campaign. He would however stay with the BBC, fronting their coverage of the FA Cup next season as well as the 2026 World Cup in the summer.
There is however now speculation that his association with the BBC could potentially end earlier than that after a social media post shared by the presenter.
Despite the speculation over his future, Lineker presented the BBC’s coverage of Saturday’s FA Cup final between Crystal Palace and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. He is joined in the studio by pundits Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Glenn Murray.
Ahead of his final Match of the Day of the season, here’s a look at more about the former striker and presenter.
Net worth
It is understood that Lineker’s net worth is around £30 million, with a big chunk of that coming from his salary from the BBC. The corporation’s accounts from 2023/24 confirmed that the Match of the Day presenter’s earnings were around £1.35 million.
As well as earnings from the BBC, Lineker has income from his own podcast media company ‘Goalhanger’. The company’s accounts showed a worth of around £1.9 million, plus an additional £2.7 million in bank reserves, in May 2024.
He also signed a new deal with Leicester based company Walkers Crisps in 2020, worth £1.2 million. The deal sees him in more of an ambassadorial role focusing on grassroots sports and reducing plastic use.
Divorce
In 2016 it was announced that Lineker was splitting from second wife Danielle Bux, after six years of marriage. In an interview three years later in 2019, he explained: "Danielle and I are best mates, we still speak three times a day, we text all the time. When she comes to London, she stays with me, and when I go to LA, I see her."
Lineker remains single but said in an interview with the Times last year: "I like being on my own... I don't feel lonely. I have the odd date here and there, but nothing, not in terms of a long relationship. I've been married most of my adult life. Two really good marriages, I'm friends with both."
New 'life partner'
When it was suggested by Micah Richards on the Rest is Football podcast that Lineker needs a new partner, Alan Shearer said that he’s already got one in his dog Filbert, to which Lineker replied: “Absolutely, loyal, loyal to the end that boy, a lovely lad.”
Lineker announced in 2022 that he had welcomed his rescue dog into his family after adopting him from Calafornia. Filbert is named after Leicester City’s Old Stadium Filbert Street, where Lineker started his football career.
