Eddie Howe is wanted for a Newcastle exit to become England boss after the World Cup even if there are some concerns over him being “naïve” at times, Chris Waddle insists.

The 62-time capped former England star and ex-Newcastle winger told Football Insider exclusively that the former Bournemouth boss’ style of play would go down well with the Three Lions’ fans.

Prior to Thomas Tuchel‘s appointment in October 2024, Howe was in the running for the England job.

However, the 47-year-old ended up remaining at St James’ Park and has since led Newcastle to their first major trophy in 70 years.

Chris Waddle wants to see Eddie Howe given England job

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, via NewBettingSites.uk, Waddle explained that whilst Howe’s teams could be naïve at times and lost avoidable games, his style of football would be enjoyed by England fans.

When asked whether Howe should be the next England manager, he said: “Yes. I would say after the World Cup next year in America, he should be given the job.

“I think Tuchel signed a short contract to the World Cup and he’s probably got that ambition to do other jobs or go back into league football, club football.

“Eddie Howe, I like the way he plays. People can say, you know, not really had a lot of football in Europe, had the Champions League last year, obviously last season. They did alright, Newcastle bit naive at times I thought. Especially against Milan when they got knocked out when they should have just played for the draw or parked the bus and went through.

“They didn’t, they played on the front foot the whole game and it cost them. But I think Eddie’s style of play would definitely go down well with England fans. Plays on the front foot, exciting football, has a good balance to his side.”

Attacking Eddie Howe ideal choice for England fans

Despite his success on Tyneside, Howe continues to be linked with the England role.

Tuchel’s contract expires at the end of the 2026 World Cup, and as suggested by Waddle, the German manager may be keen to return to club football after his spell in charge of the Three Lions.

As for Howe, the opportunity to take charge of his country’s side may be too appealing to turn down, especially after having won a trophy for Newcastle.

The English manager has stayed true to the free-flowing attacking football he made his name for whilst in charge of Bournemouth, with the Magpies scoring the second most goals per game in the Premier League with 1.9, behind only Liverpool‘s 2.3.
