£11m Nottingham Forest player endures nightmare cameo as European hopes evaporate into thin air

Nottingham Forest allowed a number of players to leave the club in the January transfer window as Nuno Espirito Santo tried to reshuffle his pack.

The Reds were flying around that time and that had led to a number of players kicking their heels and not getting many minutes out on the pitch on a regular basis.

One of those was Andrew Omobamidele, who had failed to make a single appearance in the Premier League on the back of Nikola Milenkovic’s arrival during the summer window.

Omobamidele was given rave reviews for his first few performances in the team for Strasbourg, as Liam Rosenior gave him the chance to revive himself a little bit and more crucially, play some football.

The Ligue 1 race for Europe has taken some twists and turns in recent weeks and Omobamidele’s latest outing for his loan club will live long in the memory for all the wrong reasons.

Andrew Omobamidele drops Strasbourg disasterclass

This was a game to forget for the central defender as the hopes and dreams of Strasbourg evaporated into thin air with a 3-2 defeat on home soil against Le Havre.

Former Forest loanee Andrey Santos scored early doors to give the team a positive start but Abdoulaye Toure equalised on the stroke of half-time to restore parity.

Sebastian Nanasi put Rosenior’s team back into the lead, with Josue Casimir once again bringing the game level with 20 minutes left to play.

MORE FOREST STORIES

Omobamidele was then introduced with just two minutes of normal time remaining, with carnage ensuing and the Forest man firmly in the thick of things.

The defender managed just four touches of the ball after being introduced to see the team home for an invaluable point and was also remarkably sent off for two yellow cards.

His second caution came when he committed a foul in the penalty area, allowing Toure to score his second goal of the game and send the away fans into delirium.

Omobamidele future uncertain this summer

It’s already been claimed that Strasbourg have reservations on Omobamidele and this escapade might have made Rosenior’s mind up completely on the Republic of Ireland enforcer.

That would see him return to Forest but it would seem as though his chances of game time at the City Ground look bleak given the options that the team have in defence at the moment.

Omobamidele should still improve in the years to come but given that he cost just £11 million, Forest may fancy their chances of recouping the money back which they paid for the centre-back.

The 23-year-old will want to shake this episode off pretty quickly and it will now be fascinating to see what happens with him during the summer transfer window.
