Everton and Newcastle are keen to agree an eight-figure transfer for Sean Longstaff which will suit all parties, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about Everton‘s bid to sign one of their long-term targets.
Longstaff has been on David Moyes’ transfer shortlist for some time and would be open to the move, and sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle aren’t likely to demand more than £12million for him.
The 27-year-old will soon be in the last year of his contract at St. James’ Park and isn’t expected to be a regular in Eddie Howe’s side next season, with just eight league starts to Longstaff‘s name in 2024–25.
Sources have told Football Insider that with Newcastle keen to sell off several fringe players and boost their PSR position this summer, Longstaff’s exit for a nominal £12m fee is seen as a no-brainer for Howe.

Everton well placed to agree £12m Sean Longstaff transfer
Football Insider revealed on 17 May that Everton’s plethora of out-of-contract players will free up £32m in the wage bill if and when they leave the Toffees this summer, and this will open the door for Longstaff.

Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that a £12m deal for the midfielder is affordable for Everton, and Longstaff will be equally keen to make an impact at the Hill Dickinson Stadium next term.
“They could afford a deal for him, no doubt about that – I don’t think it would cost too much to get [Longstaff] out of Newcastle”, he told Football Insider.
“He’s going into the final year of his contract at St James’ Park so I don’t think Newcastle will be able to command a huge fee for him, you’re probably looking around £10–12million.
“He’s been a long-term target for Everton in previous transfer windows – if he’s looking at his long-term prospects, he’s probably not going to get regular first team football at Newcastle next season.
“He’s only started eight Premier League games this season for Newcastle, so the player himself might feel this is the right time to move on.
“With the player out of contract in 2026, this could be [Newcastle’s] last chance to cash in on him, so they might see a sale as good business sense as it’ll help with PSR and FFP for them as well.
“I think it’s a deal that makes a lot of sense for both clubs.
“Everton would be getting a good player in Sean Longstaff, a player keen to prove a point – while Newcastle could get a decent fee for a player who is entering the final year of his contract.”

Everton ready to splash the cash ahead of significant summer
Newcastle fans are ready to see the back of Longstaff after failing to cash in on the Magpies academy product in January, and Everton will be happy to give him the chance to kick his career back into life.
Everton’s seismic summer of both on and off-field change is already underway with Ashley Young, Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia set to leave at the end of their contracts, and more departures likely to follow.
The Friedkin Group will provide Moyes with funds to ensure the Toffees’ first season at their new home is a successful one, and with Liam Delap high on Everton’s transfer shortlist, home-grown and Premier League-proven additions are the priority.
