Carragher shares what he's heard West Ham are planning this summer after poor Potter start

Jamie Carragher has revealed live on air what he’s heard West Ham are planning to do this summer after a ‘poor’ start to life under Graham Potter.

It was just a couple of weeks ago Graham Potter was coming under severe early pressure at West Ham.

After replacing Julen Lopetegui in January, the Hammers had regressed both in terms of league position and results.

When West Ham collapsed from winning 2-1 to lose 3-2 with six minutes left at his former club Brighton a few weeks ago, Potter was booed off by both sets of fans.

The Hammers were booed off again when they drew with Tottenham’s reserves a week later.

That left Potter with a worse win ratio than the hapless Avram Grant as West Ham went to Old Trafford with just three wins from his 16 games in charge.

The Irons improved that record to four from 17 with a 2-0 victory over Man United.

It has been difficult to contextualise that victory, though, given Man United are losing most weeks right now amid their own disastrous campaign.

Despite the major overhaul of players and two managerial changes since this time last year, the Hammers’ squad has been really poorly put together.

Some West Ham fans have doubts over whether Potter is the right man for the job long term.

Majority owner David Sullivan initially only wanted to appoint Potter on a six-month deal which would then be reviewed in the summer.

It is fair to state that Sullivan would have had serious reservations about keeping Potter had he got his way with the length of contract given how things have panned out so far.

The manager signed a two-and-a-half-year deal, though, and West Ham gave Potter their unequivocal backing when he was facing serious pressure before the Man United win.

While West Ham clearly need an overhaul, the club has made it clear PSR means players must be sold before Potter can buy.

Prominent journalist David Ornstein suggests West Ham are bluffing over PSR as part of a new transfer strategy.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire also questioned West Ham’s ‘strange’ PSR claims.

Now Jamie Carragher has shared what he’s heard West Ham are planning this summer after a poor start to life under Potter.

The top pundit was interviewed live on air at the London Stadium before the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest.

Carragher: Potter would have expected more of himself

Carragher says things have not worked out as Potter or West Ham would have expected or hoped.

The former Liverpool hero says the Hammers’ season has been a complete write-off.

And as a result Carragher says he has heard big changes are coming in the summer transfer window.

“It has been (a complete write-off this season for West Ham),” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I think Graham Potter himself would have expected a lot more from when he came in to the position they find themselves in right now.

“It’s been a really poor season.

“There’s going to be a lot of change at West Ham over the summer.

“(That’s clear) just from the nature of how many players are out of contract and he will want to put his own stamp on this team.

“But he will want to finish the season strongly and it will also just give them a little bit of momentum and maybe a little bit of confidence in the manager going into next season.”

That is encouraging for Hammers fans to hear.

Big change is needed and it sounds like it is coming too.

But Potter won’t be among those changes after his difficult start.

One thing is for certain, though, Potter will start next season under a great deal of pressure if he is backed to bring players in and make this West Ham side his own.
