It's no secret that Manchester United have to strengthen this summer. The Red Devils have endured their worst season in Premier League history, having picked up just 39 points from 37 matches. They currently sit 16th and, if the bottom three clubs hadn't been so poor, they could well have been in a relegation scrap.
Ruben Amorim has a huge job on his hands if he is to turn United's fortunes around. The summer transfer window is a huge opportunity for him to get rid of the players he finds surplus to requirements and replace them with better players that suit his style of play.

David de Gea

It would be a huge surprise should David de Gea make the move back to United. The Spaniard was once one of the best goalkeepers in world football but, after a few shaky seasons, he left the club on a free transfer in 2023 and was replaced by Andre Onana.
After a season away from the sport, he joined Fiorentina at the start of the campaign, and has excelled for the Italian club. In contrast, his successor at United, Onana, has struggled mightily in a red shirt and could be replaced in the summer. Now 34, De Gea's best days are behind him but if his performances for Fiorentina are anything to go by, he still has plenty to offer between the sticks.

United have been extremely poor in front of goal this season. When United signed Rasmus Hojlund for £72m in 2023, it was expected he would be United's starting striker for many years to come. However, the Dane has had a nightmare in England, having netted just 26 goals in 93 matches. Joshua Zirkzee was also signed last summer to give competition to Hojlund, but he too doesn't appear to be the answer to United's problems.
Given their struggles, United are expected to sign a striker this summer and Victor Osimhen is one of the best in the business. The Nigerian striker, 26, has scored goals for fun over the last few years and has netted 35 times in 39 matches for Galatasaray this term.

United have multiple centre-backs at their disposal right now, including Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. Rooney still thinks they should strengthen in defence, though, and has urged them to sign Guehi.
Guehi has emerged into one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League in recent years and is now also a regular for England. Still just 24 years old, Guehi could be a key pplayer for United for the next decade should they manage to pry him away from the South London club. They could have competition for his signature, though, with his former side Chelsea also reportedly interested.
