Chris Waddle says Eddie Howe will be next England manager - How about we just let Thomas Tuchel …

· 18 May 2025, 14:30

**Eddie Howe has been touted as a future England boss for years, even during his time at Bournemouth, but since taking over at Newcastle United, the calls have got louder.**

There can be little doubt that Eddie Howe is the best English manager working today, evidenced by lifting the Carabao Cup trophy this season, the first English manager to hoist domestic silverware since Harry Redknapp in 2008.

Howe was heavily linked, in the media at least, to the England job last year when Gareth Southgate stepped down from the role.

It caused a lot of disruption at the club, along with the departure of Amanda Staveley and Merhdad Ghodoussi and the arrival of Paul Mitchell. The whole club was in a state of flux, and the rumours around Eddie Howe weren't helping.

Thomas Tuchel hasn't even had a chance to take that scarf off and Chris Waddle is replacing him

Pick your moments, Waddle!

--------------------------

Thankfully, the FA appointed German manager Thomas Tuchel, and it later came to light that Eddie Howe wasn't even contacted, which suggests he didn't put his name forward as he had said many times that he has plenty left to do at club level with Newcastle.

It's perhaps inevitable that Howe will become the national coach at some point, but why is Chris Waddle talking about it now? In an interview with [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-england-to-appoint-newcastle-boss-eddie-howe/), the former Toon star has talked up the Newcastle manager for the top job.

> “I think Tuchel signed a short contract to the World Cup and he’s probably got that ambition to do other jobs or go back into league football, club football.“Eddie Howe, I like the way he plays. People can say, you know, not really had a lot of football in Europe, had the Champions League last year, obviously last season. They did alright, Newcastle bit naive at times I thought. Especially against Milan when they got knocked out when they should have just played for the draw or parked the bus and went through.

> “They didn’t, they played on the front foot the whole game and it cost them. But I think Eddie’s style of play would definitely go down well with England fans. Plays on the front foot, exciting football, has a good balance to his side.”

Thomas Tuchel has barely got his feet under the desk

----------------------------------------------------

Thomas Tuchel probably hasn't even settled on the position of his desk toys yet, and we're already talking about the next manager.

It's hardly fair on him, and it's not fair on Eddie Howe. Let's leave all this talk until it's relevant instead of creating meaningless distractions at a key point in the season.

Thankfully, we're pretty sure that Eddie Howe won't be reading Football Insider, but honestly, this has triggered me more than it probably should have.
