The strangest part of the Ruben Amorim debate is that the only big name who has discussed sacking the Manchester United manager so far is Ruben Amorim himself, an admission he made seven days ago − which is a long time in United’s current life.

That was after the defeat to West Ham, the 17th of the season, since when there has been an 18th. The support seemed, even at Stamford Bridge to be broadly behind Amorim − they sang his song, even if there might be private misgivings. Ineos, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, minority owner, majority influence, are not budging. Even the former United player punditocracy, titans of the podcast world, seem to feel chiefly that United’s problems lie elsewhere.
