Jamie Vardy marked his Leicester City farewell with his 200th goal as the talismanic striker scored in classic fashion to blow the roof off the King Power Stadium.
On his 500th and final appearance for the club, Vardy latched on to James Justin’s pass and finished past Alex Palmer to put City a goal ahead against Ipswich.
It was a throwback from City’s number nine as he made the run off the shoulder of the last man and finished coolly before running over to taunt the visiting fans.
The Ipswich supporters had chanted disparagingly about Vardy’s wife and sung ‘Rooney!’ during the opening half-hour, so when Vardy scored, he made a beeline for the travelling fans to shut them up.
Vardy had earlier missed two good chances, one when taking the ball too wide after accepting Jordan Ayew’s through ball, and then firing into the side-netting from a free-kick, with some City supporters thinking he’d found the net.
But he wasn’t to miss for a third time. Justin pinched the ball in midfield and surged through the lines, beating two men before slipping in the perfect pass.
Vardy timed his run and hit the shot earlier, leaving Palmer flat-footed on his line. It was the goal Vardy had craved on his final outing, 13 years to the day that he signed for the club.
His title-winning team-mates Wes Morgan, Danny Simpson, Kasper Schmeichel, Marc Albrighton, Danny Drinkwater, Shinji Okazaki and Matty James were all in the stands to witness it.
Before the match, an impressive display saw fans show their support for Vardy, with flags on every seat reading ‘Thank you, Vards’ and with word ‘GOAT’ spelled out across the East Stand.
