Vitor Pereira could sign Matheus Cunha’s heir as Wolves eye transfer for ‘baller’ - opinion

Vitor Pereira will soon turn his attention to the summer transfer window as Wolves eye a number of targets.

As well as arrivals, it’s understood that Wolves will lose at least one key member of the first team.

Matheus Cunha is in line to join Manchester United after going public with his desire to leave Wolves in the summer transfer window.

Pereira knows his side can cope without Cunha, having remained unbeaten during the Brazilian’s most recent suspension, but a quality replacement is needed.

Wolves target Alvaro Montoro is one of Argentina’s best dribblers

Wolves have been linked to Harvey Elliott of Liverpool, who is a positional equal to Cunha, but his price tag is a real stumbling block.

Not everyone is eager for the Old Gold to be linked to the Premier League winner, as Wolves fans protested Liverpool’s £40m asking price for Elliott.

Fortunately, the Englishman isn’t the only attacking midfielder that the West Midlands club are eyeing, with Wolves showing an interest in Alvaro Montoro.

The 18-year-old Argentine talent currently represents Velez Sarsfield in his home country, but it’s understood that the playmaker is expected to leave Argentina in the summer.

Wolves’ interest in Montoro is exciting, as the Old Gold have struck gold when shopping in the South American market in recent years.

The teenager isn’t just an exciting rising star, but is also one of the best-performing players in the Argentine top flight this season, as noted by FBref.

Montoro ranks in the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the 2025 Liga Profesional when it comes to his dribbling success.

The Wolves target averages 3.13 successful take-ons per 90 for Velez Sarsfield, as well as ranking highly when it comes to drawing fouls, another indicator of his danger.

A player capable of causing chaos when in possession would be the perfect acquisition for Wolves in the summer, considering the traits that will follow Cunha out of the door.

Montoro could be an eventual Matheus Cunha replacement

At only 18, it would be a lot to ask of Montoro to come in and fill Cunha’s shoes in the Wolves squad.

However, that doesn’t mean that the Argentine could be that person one day, as his encouraging statistics portray.

Youth scout Antonio Mango waxed lyrical about the Wolves target on X, calling Montoro a ‘baller’ for how seamlessly he’s adapted to playing senior football at Velez Sarsfield.

Being a skilled dribbler and a player who is difficult to dispossess, the teenager has the traits that Wolves will be crying out for when Cunha leaves, giving Pereira some food for thought.

Wolves have been the choice for upcoming talent in South America in recent years. Could the Old Gold uncover treasure once again this summer?
