Boss Regis Le Bris has hailed Sunderland’s never-say-die spirit and unwavering focus on their ultimate goal of promotion to the Premier League. Preparations are already intensifying for the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United.

The Black Cats secured their place at Wembley with a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory over Coventry City, setting up a showdown with Chris Wilder’s Blades next Saturday, kick-off 3pm. Dan Ballard’s priceless header deep into stoppage time of extra time sparked unforgettable scenes at the Stadium of Light – and Le Bris believes the unity and resilience shown will be vital as the Lads target success under the famous arch.

Speaking to safc.com, the Frenchman said: “Our players never give up. They are really connected – it’s a really special group with great character. Even when we’re not great with the ball, we’re still hard to beat because of our togetherness and spirit. That character helps us stay in games.”

Coventry dominated the two legs and will feel hard done by by credit to the Black Cats for digging in and defending as though their lives depended on it. Now comes a different test against the team who were well in the chase for the automatic promotion spots until they fell away in the final couple of weeks.

“Sheffield United will now be another very tough game,” continued Le Bris. “Coventry were really good in both legs, and Sheffield will be just as strong. We’ll be prepared for the fixture, and we’ll fight until the end.

“Our focus is now fully on the final. It’s really clear – this is the main objective of the season. We have to take the final step. It will be tough, but we must put the work in now to make sure we’re ready.”

Tickets for the final are now sold out. Le Bris and his team will be backed by 35,531 supporters at Wembley as the red and white army return to the capital – although they won’t be wearing their home kit as this privilege will go to their opponents by virtue of their higher league placing. A further communication will be issued to supporters in advance should any additional tickets become available.
