Former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood has insisted in separate interviews that he is planning to stay at Marseille this summer as they prepare for the Champions League.
Greenwood, who joined the Ligue 1 club last summer, has been the subject of rumours linking him with a move back to the Premier League in recent weeks. At the beginning of this month, The Sun reported that Greenwood was desperate to return to England, particularly the north west, to be closer to his family.
This was followed by The Telegraph who backed up these reports and claimed two Premier League clubs were looking at the possibility of signing Greenwood. It was also claimed that Marseille were open to selling the forward in the next two seasons.
Before the game against Rennes, Greenwood admitted he was settled at Marseille and was looking forward to representing the club in the Champions League. And after bagging twice in a 4-2 victory which secured Champions League football for next season, Greenwood doubled down on his desire to stay in the south of France.
"An incredible feeling tonight. I would have liked to score a hat-trick, but well, it wasn't to be," he told reporters as quoted by Foot Mercato.
"The victory is still important, I feel good here, the people are incredible, the atmosphere is incredible, it's something very strong in Europe. It's going to be incredible with the Champions League."
In another interview in the mixed zone, Greenwood added: "Hopefully, I can keep improving with all the players and the team. It's one of the best atmospheres in Europe here. Of course, I want to stay next season."
United hold a significant sell-on clause for Greenwood should he leave Marseille for a fee. The winger left United last summer after being suspended by the club in January 2022 amid allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.
All charges were later dropped and the winger would join Getafe on loan on deadline day in the summer of 2023. His permanent move to Marseille in 2024 saw United include the aforementioned sell-on clause in the deal.
