Liverpool supporters seemingly had the last laugh on Everton as the Toffees bid adieu to Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Reds' adversaries are set to relocate to their brand-new home at Bramley-Moore Dock next season, with the Toffees playing their final men's match at Goodison, securing a 2-0 victory over already-relegated Southampton.

The legendary stadium will continue to host matches, becoming the new home ground for Everton's women's team from next season.

It was an emotionally charged day in the blue corner of Merseyside, with Liverpool offering its own tasteful tribute to Goodison ahead of Sunday's farewell - although it seems some Reds fans couldn't resist one last playful jab at their neighbours.

With supporters flocking to the stadium from the crack of dawn, the streets surrounding Goodison were awash with blue as fans ignited flares before the match kicked off.

However, images and videos shared online reveal that not all was blue. Amidst the sea of Everton fans, red smoke could be spotted in one area, presumably from a flare, reports Liverpool.com.

This follows an incident last month where some Liverpool fans were reportedly tricked into purchasing blue flares ahead of their match against Tottenham, during which Arne Slot's squad clinched the Premier League title.

While it remains uncertain whether the red flares around Goodison were ignited by Liverpool fans or if any Everton supporters accidentally set them off, it appears the Reds faithful may have exacted some revenge following their rivals' prank.

Liverpool showed their sentimental side on social media, posting a touching black-and-white photo that reflected the deep bond between Reds fans and the Evertonian community after the heart-wrenching 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

The powerful image showcased a heartfelt banner from Liverpool supporters directed towards their city rivals, with the moving message: "The Kop thanks you all. We never walked alone.
