The Sacramento Kings are at a crossroads. Their team is good enough to contend for a low seed in the playoffs or the NBA Play-In Tournament, but not enough to truly contend for a title.
That was made clear when the Kings traded De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs as part of a three-team trade that landed Zach LaVine in Sacramento in return.
It was a peculiar move, as many NBA fans have seen the ceiling of what a LaVine and DeMar DeRozan-led team can do, as well as their limitations.
Kings predicted to send 6-time All-Star to Clippers for NBA Champion
If the Kings do decide to split up the former Chicago Bulls tandem, it would likely be DeRozan who would be on his way out.
Matt George, ABC 10's sports anchor and reporter in Sacramento, believes the Kings could be targeting a former NBA champion.
In a hypothetical trade, George has the Kings sending DeRozan to his home city of Los Angeles, specifically the Clippers, in exchange for Norman Powell.
Powell was essential to the Clippers' success this season, as he was able to carry the load offensively at times when their stars would miss time.
"Don't think the Clippers would do this after the season Norman Powell had, unless they are afraid of losing him for nothing in free agency," wrote George. "DeRozan & Kawhi on he same team would be...interesting."
Powell averaged a career-high 21.8 points per game this season and shot 41.8% from deep.
Powell has shown the ability to win games with his hot-shooting nights. The only problem is, when the shots aren't falling, he's relatively limited.
However, he could be just what the Kings need, as DeRozan, while a lethal scoring threat, offers little in terms of outside shooting.
