Social Media Spotlight: Mothers’ Day, Knicks, and Oswaldo

It’s Sunday once more, and you know what that means — it’s time for our weekly social media roundup! This has been a rollercoaster of an emotional week in New York sports, with the Knicks stunning the Boston Celtics to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, fan favorite Oswaldo Cabrera injuring his ankle sliding into home plate in Seattle, and, of course, this year’s first round of the Subway Series. How has social media responded to these crazy events? Let’s find out!

Happy Mothers’ Day

Of course, where else can we start this week, except with a roundup of the posts that Yankees players in honor of Mothers’ Day, celebrating both their own mothers and the mothers of their children.

Get Well Soon, Oswaldo

The biggest Yankee-related news of this week was, of course, Oswaldo Cabrera’s devastating injury. The Yankees third baseman/utilityman/human golden retriever slid into home plate in the top of the ninth on Monday and suffered an ankle injury that required him to be removed from the field in an ambulance. In the immediate aftermath, the Yankees posted well-wishes to Cabrera on all their Instagram accounts, a post that many Yankees’ players (both former and current) immediately shared.

As we waited for updates, well-wishes continued to pour in for Cabrera. The Yankees’ new radio broadcaster Dave Sims, the official Seattle Mariners’ Twitter page, and even Knicks star Josh Hart (just a few short hours after witnessing a gruesome ankle injury in the postseason) took to social media.

Finally, on Friday, we heard from Cabrera himself, after he underwent surgery. In both his post and in the comments’ section (since he ran out of room in the caption), Cabrera thanks everyone for the support they gave him and vows to return to the diamond. In particular, he thanks Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe for visiting him in the hospital that night, for the trainer Tim for keeping him calm on the field, and his family for dropping everything to head to Seattle to handle things.

Also in the comments of this post, you can find numerous teammates of Cabrera, both current and former, wishing him the best of luck in his recovery; this group includes Ron Marinaccio, Austin Wells, Luke Weaver, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Yankees at the Garden

Earlier in that day, the Knicks took on the Celtics in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and who was in attendance but former Yankees manager Joe Torre. Hmm, no wonder they put together a strong second half and won the game in decisive fashion!

Matt Carpenter Retires

Earlier this week, former Yankee designated hitter Matt Carpenter announced his retirement.

The Broadcasters’ Road Trip

Long road trips are fun for the Yankees’ broadcast crews, who get some time to explore other cities when they’re not at the ballpark. This time around, Suzyn Waldman, Meredith Marakovitz, and Dave Sims had some fun on the West Coast, with Sims in particular reuniting with some of his old crew mates.
