[The West Ham](https://www.claretandhugh.info/west-hams-most-wanted-one-players-transfer-saga-looks-to-be-over-at-last/) fans made their verdict very clear as the famous ‘_you don’t know what you’re doing’_ chant rang out as we all waited over six minutes for VAR to decide that the goal was indeed a goal. I could have told you that from my sofa.
There was another chant which was a little more ‘agricultural’ in content too which I’ll not describe here.
Millions of pounds of technology, training, marketing, tweets, endless Premier League propaganda yet this ‘video assistant referee’ system – unlike goal line technology- is useless. Former referees even agree it needs binning.
It is ruining the game and driving fans- no – ‘spectators’ as they are becoming – away. Goals cannot be celebrated now. Compounded with inept refereeing by Sam Barrett today the game was largely destroyed as a watchable contest.
It isn’t sport anymore, it is ‘entertainment’. And it needs to change. The penny dropped whilst waiting for the ‘VAR’ decision: I watched Championship games earlier this season with drama, passion and true fan agony and celebration: There was no VAR in sight yet everyone survived.
Referees make mistakes the same as VAR does – but we lived with them before the VAR-monster and would do so again rather than endure more uncertainty and the zero spontaneity produced by this pointless, useless system which is undermining England’s national sport.
Time to start a movement and time to pull the plug on VAR.
