‘Hopefully…’: Wrexham target Tom Cairney was fully sure about one thing amid contract…

Wrexham transfer target Tom Cairney spoke about his future at Fulham following his most recent game.

Despite the 2024/25 League One season only recently drawing to its conclusion, Wrexham’s preparations for their Championship campaign are already underway.

Wrexham are already looking to make progress in regards to incomings and outgoings at the Racecourse Ground; Paul Mullin looks set to be a potential high profile departure from the club, whilst fellow striker Steven Fletcher’s time has been confirmed to have drawn to its conclusion.

More positively, Wrexham are sniffing around for top, experienced players who can help them settle at Championship level. One man Wrexham have targeted is Tom Cairney from Fulham, a player with vast Premier League and Championship experience.

Cairney’s contract is set to expire with the Premier League side, but signing him at this point may prove to be difficult.

What Tom Cairney said about his Fulham future amid links to Wrexham

Wrexham are interested in signing Cairney, in a deal that could see the Scotsman handed a lucrative £50,000 per week deal.

However, it could be quite difficult to lure him away from Craven Cottage, that is if he is offered another contract at Fulham.

On Sunday afternoon, he bagged a goal in a 3-2 victory against Brentford, where he was asked following the tie about his future at the club.

“Nothing is sorted yet,” said Cairney to the BBC. “Next week is my final game for Fulham. Hopefully it’s not. In football, sometimes things go to the last minute, and hopefully it’s not my final time at Craven Cottage next weekend.”

Wrexham may have to sit patiently for next Fulham move

Whilst Wrexham would undoubtedly offer a fantastic option for Cairney in the Championship, especially if the wage would be as high as reported, the Dragons will have to sit and wait for Fulham to make their move.

It is clear that Cairney has confirmed his heroic status at Fulham, and staying there would be his priority; there is just uncertainty as to whether the London-based club would be willing to offer the veteran midfielder yet another season of Premier League football.

Whilst Wrexham may not potentially come out of these negotiations successfully because of the position that Fulham find themselves in, it is nonetheless a positive sign that both Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are identifying players that could still hack it in the Premier League.
