After suggesting he could leave Aston Villa, Emiliano Martinez has now sparked further transfer speculation with interest from Man Utd and Barcelona.
Emiliano Martinez Hints at Villa Exit as Top Clubs Circle
As per DSports, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez is being pursued heavily by Man Utd and Barcelona. The 32-year-old World Cup-winning goalkeeper was emotional when he waved goodbye to the home fans after Villa’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham. That has lead to speculation that he may have played his last game.
Though he signed an extension to his contract until 2029 just last summer. But, he looked as if he was saying a goodbye. Martinez built up a great name since moving from Arsenal in 2020. He is now one of the best keepers in the league and Argentina’s first-choice keeper.
He has reached such a level that the Red Devils and Barca interest means a move could happen this summer. While Saudi clubs are also keen on the player. The pull of playing for a European giant could sway the Argentine star’s decision.
Utd are particularly in the market for a reliable goalkeeper after Andre Onana’s shaky debut season. Even former club legend Wayne Rooney has suggested to the Red Devils they bring David De Gea back. He highlighted their lack of confidence in the current squad.
Utd and Barca Both in the Market for a New No.1
The Catalans are monitoring the situation closely. Their current No.1, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, has been sidelined for most of the season with a serious knee injury. Veteran Wojciech Szczesny stepped in after coming out of retirement. And he has performed well. But, his contract ends soon and it’s unclear if he’ll stay on. This leaves the Spanish giants looking for a long-term solution. And Martinez fits the bill perfectly.
Villa head coach Unai Emery has not spoken regarding Martinez’s future, as the rumors go up.
For now, the future of Martinez is still uncertain. But, it is clear that he is one of the targets for the Europe’s elite. It is likely that the keeper will be moving out this June.
