Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney could be set for a Premier League return in his first club role since being sacked by Plymouth Argyle in December.

Rooney parted ways with Plymouth after seven months, with the Championship side struggling at the bottom of the league table.

Unfortunately for Rooney this was just another short stint with a club after his previous four-month stint with Birmingham City from October 2023 to January 2024.

Now, five months after his last managerial job came to an end, Rooney is looking to re-join one of his former clubs.

A return to one of his sides from his playing days isn’t a new concept for Rooney, having managed D.C. United for over a year between July 2022 and October 2023 having played for the MLS side towards the end of his playing career.

However, his most recent prospect would see a return to the Premier League with his boyhood club, Everton.

Wayne Rooney to re-join Everton

talkSPORT revealed on their commentary of the Everton vs Southampton match, that Rooney could return to the club next season as part of David Moyes’ coaching staff.

The fixture was the last game to take place at Goodison Park with Rooney in attendance for the celebration, seen talking with David Moyes.

Presenters Adrian Durham and Andy Townsend raised the rumour that Rooney could be joining Moyes’ team instead of taking on a head coach role again, similar to Ruud van Nistelrooy when he re-joined Manchester United in the summer.

Whether there’s substance to this is a different matter, however if Rooney is to head back to Everton, no doubt we’ll hear about it more very soon.
