Some of the league's best teams have been deploying two-big lineups, and the playoffs have helped to elevate the strategy, as NBA analyst Todd Whitehead pointed out recently.
The only two lineups on this chart without a positive net rating have either a rookie on it or a sick player with some unknown illness and an old man (no disrespect to Al Horford). So, not only has the day of two bigs returned, but it's wildly successful.
The Spurs won two championships by running the Twin Towers setup with Tim Duncan and David Robinson anchoring the defense. With Victor Wembanyama now in uniform, they can bring back some of that nostalgia with the new twist of NBA evolution, and there are several players who could help them accomplish that.
Any Spurs' Twin Tower duo will be the best in the NBA
Wembanyama raises the ceiling of any big man pairing, not just because of his freakish height, but his immeasurable potential. The only question is who San Antonio should go after? Free agency will bring options for the Silver and Black, and a couple of players who would be great fits next to the French phenom are already on the graphic above.
Naz Reid has a player option, and there's a good chance he'll decline to sign on for another season. He's made a name for himself, so he could be looking for more money, to start, or just to get out of Minnesota.
The Timberwolves are still in the playoffs, with just as much of a chance to win a title as OKC, New York, or Indiana. If they win, Reid could see the job as finished and be ready to move on. If they don't win, but get close, there's always a notion of unfinished business that could keep him in Minny.
Whatever happens with their title run, Spurs fans should hope he leaves, regardless. Reid is an awesome player to have on your team, and they would be smart to go after him. He's a smart defender, can move his feet, and hits big shots.
The New Jersey-born big man went from being an undrafted prospect to a key piece on a playoff team, shooting 47% this postseason. He's a hard worker who'd be perfect for San Antonio.
The Spurs have other options to form a great big man duo
Steven Adams is the other player from the graphic above who'd fit well. We all know Adams. He's the NBA's strong man and would provide a much-needed post presence, especially when it's time to guard guys like Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. With Wembanyama giving help, they'd be extremely formidable in the paint defensively. The Houston big man will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Myles Turner will also be an unrestricted free agent, and he may want to leave no matter what happens after this Pacers run. Turner has been on the trade block for what seems like every season over the past five years. Indy is having a stellar postseason run, but that may not be enough after the way they've treated him.
He'd be great next to Victor Wembanyama, and the two would be almost interchangeable in the sense that both players can hit threes, score on the move, and are versatile defenders.
Of course, if Brian Wright figures out how to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, they'd automatically have one of the best big man pairings in NBA history. The defense would be impenetrable, and the rim running would traumatize their opponents. I would like to see that very much. The addition of any of these guys would give San Antonio a new Twin Towers combo capable of wreaking havoc, though.
