Awoniyi, Murillo, Moreira - Nottingham Forest injury news before crucial Chelsea clash

An incredible season for Nottingham Forest is set to reach a gripping climax on the banks of the Trent this weekend.

The Reds go into their final-day encounter at home to Chelsea on Sunday (4pm kick-off) still in with a chance of finishing in the top five of the Premier League. Nuno Espirito Santo's side are seventh in the table but are just one point outside of the Champions League spots.

It is all teed up to be quite the day at the City Ground. Below is a look at Forest's injury state of play ahead of the clash with the Blues.

Taiwo Awoniyi

Injury: Abdomen.

What we know:The Reds striker is recovering from the serious abdominal injury he sustained when he collided with a post late on in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City. Awoniyi underwent two operations last week and was placed in an induced coma for a time.

He had received treatment following the incident and there was confusion over whether he would be able to continue. In the end, he did play on against the Foxes but was clearly struggling during the remaining minutes. The extent of his injury became clear the following day. Forest are hopeful the Nigerian will be well enough to at least attend their game with Chelsea.

What has been said: “The information we have is that at least five days he has to be there (in hospital) on observation, if everything goes well,” head coach Nuno said in last Friday's pre-match press conference before his team's trip to face West Ham United. “He is in good hands and his family are there, which is what he really needs.

“The players are constantly chatting on the groups. We know that he is well. He just needs time.

“I hope that next week he can join us and be around, because he’s a wonderful boy. This season has been so hard on him so we just feel so sorry for him.

“He had surgery. The surgery went well, thank God, so he is on observation now. He’s recovering."

On Sunday, before Forest's clash with the Hammers, Awoniyi took to social media to post a message. He wrote: “This season has been one of the most difficult of my career but through it all, I have felt the love. With the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, to still be smiling, and to be in good spirits.

“To my teammates, coaches, staff and the entire Forest family, thank you for your well wishes, seeing you all on your visit to the hospital lifted my spirits more than words can say. Wishing the boys the very best in these last two games, keep believing and keep pushing. I’m with you all the way and I can’t wait to be back out there with the boys doing what I love.

“To my family, friends and football fans, thank you for the support, and to everyone back home in Nigeria who has checked in on me, prayed for me and left kind words, thank you. I see them. I feel them. And I carry them with me every day as I recover. Come on you Reds.”

Murillo

Injury: Ankle.

What we know: After missing the game against Leicester with a hamstring problem, the defender returned to the XI in the capital. However, he required treatment in the final minutes of the first half of his team's 2-1 win over the Hammers after hurting his ankle when going up for an attacking corner.

The Brazilian needed support from the Reds’ medical staff as he hobbled off to the side. Once the whistle had blown for the break, struggling to walk, he was then driven off on a medical cart and appeared to be in discomfort.

Fellow centre-back Morato warmed up during the interval and was ready to come on. However, Murillo reappeared for the second half and played the rest of the game.

What has been said: "Initially I heard the pop in my ankle and told the doctors I couldn't go on," Murillo said via a translator after the match. "But luckily we were close to half-time so they were able to analyse the situation calmly throughout half-time.

"I spoke to the doctors and said, OK, if I don't feel anything in the first 10 minutes (of the second half), then it's OK, I'll carry on playing. In the end, I was OK and the ankle is fine as well.”

Nuno said in his post-match press conference:“Since the beginning, he was struggling. You could see it. But he made an effort and hopefully he is going to be available for the next one. Now it is about recovering our players and preparing.”

Eric da Silva Moreira

Injury: Unknown.

What we know: The young defender sustained an injury while on duty for Germany Under-19s last month. He was included on the bench for Forest's defeat at Aston Villa but did not get on the pitch and has not been involved since.

What has been said: “He got injured with the Germany Under-19 national team, in their second game. He has been out for two or three weeks now,” Nuno said of Moreira earlier this month.
