Jason Wilcox doing“everything in his power” to convince wonderkid to join Manchester United

Manchester United’s transfer strategy under Jason Wilcox is taking clearer shape as the club shifts focus to long-term investment in emerging talent.

The Red Devils have already been linked with a host of promising youngsters this year, with the South American market looking to be a major talking point.

Ruben Amorim is reportedly fully supportive of building a new core around younger players, with United scouts increasing their presence in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Wilcox, who officially joined from Southampton this year, is known for pushing hard on youth acquisitions – having helped develop the likes of Romeo Lavia and Tino Livramento during his time with the Saints.

And now, Manchester United appear to be laying the groundwork for a future mega move involving Argentina’s next big star.

Graeme Bailey via TBR Football reports that representatives of Franco Mastantuono have held talks with United in recent weeks as the Premier League giants join the race to sign the highly-rated River Plate playmaker.

The 16-year-old, who turns 18 next August, is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in South America and is often compared to Phil Foden due to his technique, spatial awareness and ability to glide through opposition lines.

Although Franco Mastantuono is not expected to move until 2025, discussions are said to be ongoing with Manchester United exploring the possibility of agreeing a deal in advance.

Jason Wilcox is reportedly a major driving force behind the club’s pursuit and is eager to secure the teenager before Real Madrid or domestic rivals can make their move.

The biggest obstacle remains Mastantuono’s £41 million release clause, a price tag that recently forced Inter Milan to walk away from negotiations.

The Italian side’s vice president Javier Zanetti confirmed their withdrawal, saying: “For Inter, he’s expensive for his age.

“The time will come to sit down and plan the next season.”

Despite United’s interest, Madrid are seen as favourites due to director Santiago Solari’s close ties with River Plate and the player’s entourage.

Still, with Wilcox pressing ahead and United willing to act early, the club could yet pull off a masterstroke in the transfer market.
