Viktor Gyokeres hands Manchester United major transfer blow

Manchester United’s lack of goals has been one of the most frustrating talking points of their turbulent season.

Despite glimpses of promise from Rasmus Hojlund and a brief impact from Joshua Zirkzee, the Red Devils are still searching for a clinical finisher to lead their attack.

Ineos and technical director Jason Wilcox are expected to be aggressive in the transfer market this summer, with new manager Ruben Amorim pushing for familiar faces to ease the transition at Old Trafford.

Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres had long been seen as the perfect fit.

But now, that dream move looks to be slipping away fast.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo delivered a major transfer twist on Monday, claiming Arsenal have reached a full agreement with Sporting for Viktor Gyokeres in a deal worth £58.9 million.

The report suggests it’s only a matter of time before the Swedish forward officially becomes a Gunner, dealing a major blow to Manchester United’s plans.

Gyokeres, who scored a stunning 96 goals this season while thriving in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, had been high on United’s wishlist due to his tactical familiarity and prolific finishing.

The striker’s form helped Sporting lift the Liga Portugal title, and while United hoped Amorim’s arrival would tip the scales in their favour, it appears Arsenal have won the race.

With that door closing, United are now shifting their attention to alternative targets.

According to MEN Sport, Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap has moved near the top of the list, thanks in part to his more affordable £30 million release clause and proven record in the Premier League, scoring 12 times for the newly relegated side.

At just 21, Delap fits United’s vision of signing young, high-upside talent capable of growing into key roles.

Another name being explored is Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, who also has admirers at Old Trafford.

His £62.5 million release clause and versatility across the front three make him an appealing option for Amorim’s fluid system.

While missing out on Gyokeres is a blow, United’s hunt for a reliable striker is far from over – and the reshuffling has only just begun.
