'I only say that because': Paul Merson now claims Newcastle are about to get lucky

Newcastle United are set for a grandstand finish in the Champions League battle.

Indeed, Newcastle United need to win against Everton on the final day of the Premier League season to claim a Champions League qualification spot.

Newcastle lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday after Declan Rice struck a fine goal in the second half. Eddie Howe’s side dominated for much of the first half but dropped the level of their intensity after the break, allowing the Gunners to come back into the game.

A defeat away at the Emirates Stadium is hardly a disaster but it does put a huge amount of pressure on Everton’s visit to St James’ Park later this week. Fail to win that and the Newcastle United manager could see his side drop out of the top five in the Premier League table altogether.

Pundit Paul Merson, however, doesn’t think that will happen. Still, he doesn’t seem to think that has much to do with Newcastle themselves.

Paul Merson names surprise reason Newcastle United will qualify for the Champions League

Reflecting on the Arsenal game while speaking on Sky Sports, Merson predicted Newcastle are “safe” in the top five.

He did, however, suggest that he was only saying that because Everton have little to play for right now, making Newcastle somewhat lucky. The Toffees, of course, moved miles clear of the relegation zone a while ago and have just won the final ever game at Goodison Park.

“I’d have to go with Newcastle [being] safe,” he said.

Newcastle United’s home record in the Premier League season

Newcastle have largely impressed at St James’ Park, which should make supporters feel better about what is starting to look like a play-off for a Champions League berth.

Only Liverpool have won more home games this season, while Everton have won only five times on the road across the whole campaign.

Still, what Merson is saying does have some merit. Howe’s side would back themselves to beat anyone at home but there’s little doubt it looks a good time to play Everton.

After expending so much emotional energy on their final game at Goodison Park, hopefully Newcastle can take advantage.
