Expert predicts Newcastle star to snub PSG offer

Mick Brown

Sven Botman plans to stay at Newcastle United beyond the end of the season despite reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 25-year-old feels he owes a debt to the club after his injury issues.

The Netherlands international had cruciate ligament surgery in 2023, not long after an initial three-month layoff for a separate knee injury, but has recently returned to action.

This comes after Football Insider revealed Newcastle want to sign Kim Min-jae from Bayern Munich to bolster their defence amid concerns about their current options.

Botman, meanwhile, has been a long-term target for PSG and it had recently been suggested that they could reignite their interest after his return.

However, Eddie Howe is not believed to be keen on letting any key players leave this summer and will instead aim to cash in on fringe options.

Newcastle make Sven Botman transfer decision

Brown told Football Insider last month that Min-jae is a target for Newcastle as concerns have risen about the long-term futures of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted he expects Botman to remain at St James’ Park for the same reasons.

“Eddie Howe won’t want to see Botman leave,” he told Football Insider.

“Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are coming into the later stages of their careers.

“There are a few question marks about whether some fringe players could be let go.

“So you need to keep some of your more solid players, and Botman is one of those when he is fit, and then you can go out and sign additional options.

“From the player’s point of view as well, the club have stuck with him during his long spells on the sidelines because of his injury issues.

“He will feel he owes them a debt of gratitude, so I can’t see him wanting to leave.

“I’ve seen reports about PSG being interested, but it’s not something I expect to happen.

“Even from their perspective, they’ll want to see him playing regularly for Newcastle to make sure his ability hasn’t been impacted by those injuries.”

Leeds United eye Callum Wilson swoop

Botman is not the only player to have been linked with a move away from Newcastle in recent weeks amid speculation about the future of Callum Wilson.

Brown told Football Insider on 19 May that Leeds United want to sign Wilson and are plotting a swoop to bring him in upon the expiry of his contract next month.

His Premier League experience and goalscoring prowess have placed him among the leading candidates for the position ahead of their return to the top tier.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider in December that Wilson will leave Newcastle as there are no plans to renew his terms.
