Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall could return from injury in time for the UEFA Europa League final after a training ground update.

All eyes are on Bergvall, who Postecoglou appeared to have already ruled out of the clash with Manchester United at the Estadio de San Mamés on Wednesday (21 May).

The 19-year-old injured his ankle in training ahead of the semi-final against Bodø/Glimt, and has only recently been freed from his protective boot.

However, the Swede will still be eager to make the trip to Bilbao, and it appears he could be one step closer to making this dream a reality after a recent update was shared.

Therefore, supporters could be in luck, with Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – suggesting that Bergavll has been training at Hotspur Way ahead of the final.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure Bergvall will miss the final,” Wenham said.

“Postecoglou implied that he would still be out for a while, but that might be to prevent Manchester United from being aware of which of our players are available and which aren’t.

“There’s somebody I know who I follow on X who happened to be at training last week as part of a supporters’ club invite, and he told me Bergvall trained, and I take his word on that. I’m not sure whether he was training fully on the grass or in contact training.

“However, hopefully he does feature against United because we’re going to need him.”

Postecoglou cannot rely on the return of Bergvall

While there may be a possibility to see Bergvall feature against Manchester United, it is still highly unlikely for a player returning from injury to start the game. Therefore, Postecoglou is going to have to approach the showpiece fixture like the youngster is back in North London.

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur will be important in holding down the midfield with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski out for the season, and Pape Matar Sarr a doubt for the match.

Instead of attempting to play through the midfield, Tottenham should place greater insistence on progressing the ball on the wings, unless Bissouma, as press-resistant as he can be, wants to have a go at carrying through the midfield.

The Europa League final is a huge ask for Postecoglou, especially given the weakened state of his team. However, Tottenham have already made it this far despite the injuries, so what is stopping them from winning it all?
