Manchester United’s record-breaking nightmare

Manchester United’s final week of the season now carries more weight than anyone at the club would have imagined at the start of the campaign.

A win in Wednesday’s Europa League final would secure Champions League football next season, but for many fans, that would only paper over the deep cracks exposed across a disastrous domestic run.

Ruben Amorim, who arrived to replace Erik ten Hag in October, has struggled to turn things around despite his reputation as a progressive tactician.

His current win percentage of 37.5% is the worst for any permanent United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

The club’s injury-hit campaign has seen a total collapse in league form, culminating in one of the darkest chapters in United’s Premier League history.

And the statistics now paint a bleak picture of the club’s fall from grace.

Manchester United currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, with the possibility of finishing no higher than 14th if results elsewhere go their way and they beat Aston Villa on the final day.

That alone would make this their worst-ever league finish in the Premier League era, surpassing last season’s disappointing eighth place.

They are on track for a record low in wins and points, with a maximum of just 11 victories and 42 points possible.

The club has also suffered 18 defeats – more than in any previous Premier League campaign – and their current eight-match winless run surpasses a previous worst from 1992.

Only twice before have Manchester United conceded more goals than the 54 they’ve shipped this season.

Going forward, they’ve been just as poor, with a likely record-low goal tally unless they somehow score seven past Villa.

And if Bruno Fernandes fails to net twice or Amad Diallo doesn’t bag a hat-trick, United will finish the league campaign without a single player hitting double figures – another painful first.

While a Europa League triumph could still provide a silver lining, there’s no denying this has been a season of collapse, confusion, and unwanted records for one of England’s biggest clubs.
