Arne Slot has admitted he’s unsure what the future of Mohamed Salah looks like.
Salah signed a new two-year deal to remain at Liverpool as he rubbished speculation linking him with a free agent move away from Anfield. The Egyptian is still at the peak of his powers despite turning 33 next month.
Concerns regarding Salah’s age were at the forefront of his future saga as critics questioned whether he is able to continue his sensational form to merit a lucrative new contract. But one potential way to counter the slowing down of his legs was raised by Gary Neville to Slot.
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the Reds’ penultimate Premier League game of the season away at Brighton, Neville asked the Dutchman whether he thinks Salah’s future lies more central as a striker, with Liverpool lining up with Salah, Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa on the south coast.
Despite his incredible goal record, with him notching 28 goals in 36 league games so far this campaign, Slot admitted that he’s unsure of Salah’s ability to command such a role unless the game and style evolve.

“Not too sure, depends also how the game develops or evolves,” he admitted. “I think what has changed in Mo’s game is that he went from a striker that was mainly making deep runs in behind the last line, dribbling, and scoring goals, to still do that, but also being a playmaker.
“The way we use him now I think fits him at this moment, the way the league is, best, because as a No.9, I think especially the way we use Mo now, but if we were to use him in this system as a 9, he needs to do even more defensively.

“And one of the reasons why he probably scores so many goals is that he still does a lot defensively, but I think if we look at our left winger, he needs to do a little bit more defensively than our right winger.
“So as a No.9, he would even have to defend more. So that’s why I think this role suits him, at this moment, in this system, with these players, best.”
Liverpool will likely enter the summer transfer window looking to sign a new striker, with both Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez struggling for form and goals. Jota has just six league goals to his name, while £85m Nunez continues to flop, scoring just five times.
