Alexander Isak, Joelinton & Kieran Trippier: Newcastle United injury list & return dates

Alexander Isak, Joelinton & Kieran Trippier: Newcastle United’s injury list in full & estimated return dates.

The Magpies head into their final game of the 2024-25 Premier League season requiring a win to guarantee Champions League qualification. Anything less will force United to rely on results elsewhere.

Eddie Howe’s side lost 1-0 at Arsenal last weekend and were without top scorer Isak due to a groin problem. We take a look at when the Swede and Newcastle’s other injured players could return to action.

Alexander Isak

What’s the problem?

Isak is understood to have travelled to London on Saturday night ahead of facing Arsenal but was left out of the matchday squad after experiencing some discomfort in his groin.

As a result, the Swede was sent for a precautionary scan on the morning of the game.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Asked if Isak would return in time for Everton, Howe replied: “Yeah, that's unknown. I don't know at this moment in time. He only felt pain really after training.

“He felt fine during training and then just a bit of stiffness, really so he went for a scan this morning really purely as a precaution. But then it became obvious he wasn't going to be fit to play. So I don't know.

“I think a lot will depend on how he reacts in the next few days.

“I don't think this is a surgery issue. I don't think it's something that needs mending. It certainly probably needs looking at as to why he's getting these sort of groin complaints. But yeah, it's definitely not a surgery issue.

“It's probably more of a what's he doing to strengthen that area issue, which we'll of course look at and focus on.”

Estimated return date

Everton (H), 25/05

Kieran Trippier

What’s the problem?

Trippier had started Newcastle’s last 10 matches in all competitions but has missed the last two with a calf issue.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Speaking ahead of the defeat to Arsenal, Howe said: “Kieran, I don't think so for this weekend. But again, not a big injury, very minor calf problem.”

Joelinton

What’s the problem?

Joelinton visited a specialist last month having been nursing a knee issue since February and has subsequently missed the last four matches.

The 28-year-old recently returned to Brazil for a short period before going to Barcelona for an injection.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Speaking on Friday, Howe said: “He's working away behind the scenes. He's typical Joe. He's absolutely foot to the floor to try and get back fit because that's his nature. He wants to be involved, but he's not close yet. He's still working his way back.

“I think the biggest possibility is that we don't see him again this season, then we get him ready for next year.”

Matt Targett

What’s the problem?

Targett was making only his second Premier League start of the season when he picked up a hamstring injury against former club Aston Villa last month.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Speaking after last month’s 3-0 win over Ipswich Town, Howe said: “We lost Matt Targett this week to a slight hamstring problem, again nothing serious but enough, maybe, to end his season.”

Estimated return date

2025-26 season

Lewis Hall

What’s the problem?

Hall underwent surgery on a foot problem in March and won’t return until next season.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

"I'm devastated for him actually because he had so much to look forward to at this moment of the season with the cup final - which will be a big thing for all the players at the moment,” Howe said at the time.

"Also the international experience coming up, and he was just in really good form as well and playing very well, so yeah, that's a big blow for him and for us. The most important thing now is his recovery and making sure he comes back as good as he can."
