A closer look at some of the latest Premier League transfer rumours as the season draws to a close.
The 2024/25 Premier League season is drawing to a close and the summer transfer window will soon be open for business.
With Liverpool crowned champions and the relegated teams confirmed, the only thing left to decide this season is which teams will be competing in which European tournaments next season.
It’s been a thrilling and unpredictable campaign at times and everything has been shaping up the looming transfer window. We’ve taken a closer look at some of the latest stories on the rumour mill as we prepare to tick off another Premier League season.
Man City open door for Liverpool to swoop for £126m star
Liverpool have the chance to take pole position in their pursuit of Florian Wirtz this summer. The impressive midfielder has made a name for himself as one of the most sought-after players in his position ahead of the summer window, and the Reds are in the running for his signature.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Man City have pulled out of the race to sign Wirtz, opening the door to Liverpool should they wish to step up their interest in the highly-coveted Bundesliga gem.
German outlet Kicker reported that Liverpool were among three clubs heavily in the race to sign Wirtz, alongside Manchester City and Bayern Munich. However, despite currently playing for Bayern’s rivals Bayer Leverkusen, the Bavarians are not the favourites to sign him.
Pep Guardiola and co have reportedly been put off by the amount it will take to sign Wirtz. It has been estimated that the 22-year-old will cost as much as €300 million (£253m) all in, including fees and wages. The Kicker report has claimed Leverkusen are looking to pocket €150 million (£126m) from the potential sale of Wirtz.
The 3AM Verdict: Liverpool are planning a busy summer window andFlorian Plettenberg has claimed that the Reds aren’t willing to give up on Wirtz. The Reds are eager to bring in a creative No.10, and with 16 goals and 15 assists this season, the German definitely fits the bill. As Premier League champions, Liverpool are now in a position where they will need to spend significant cash to improve their ranks, so if the funds are there, pursuing a proven creative playmaker like Wirtz could help take their attack to the next level. It’s been a while since the Reds had a true devastating midfield threat, so someone like Wirtz backing up the likes of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz would only make Liverpool even more of a threat.
Man United eye former Ruben Amorim favourite
With just 42 goals on the board, only Everton and the relegated three teams have scored fewer times this season. Ruben Amorim and co are eager to sign new creative personnel this summer and the manager’s former player Pedro Goncalves is a leading candidate. According to Caught Offside, United remain keen following their initial interest in February. The 26-year-old is making his return to fitness following a tendon injury and United are monitoring his progress.
Goncalves is under contract in Portugal until 2027 but having worked under Amorim already, it could be a promising avenue for the Red Devils to explore.
The 3AM Verdict: Goncalves is a player Amorim knows well and the player could relish the opportunity to be reunited with his former manager. This season has been halted due to injury but he has still managed 12 goal-scoring contributions. Last term, the 26-year-old scored 18 goals and added a further 17 assists in all competitions and bagged 20 goals and 15 assists prior to that. Having been a regular starter under Amorim, he was clearly a favourite of the manager’s. Goncalves’ numbers alone are impressive, never mind with some additional new signings. His influence could help hoist Man United back up the table and reignite their threat to the rest of the Premier League.
