Liverpool eye Anthony Gordon deal as Arne Slot lines up double exit to sign Newcastle United man

Newcastle United and England winger Anthony Gordon is being eyed by Premier League winners Liverpool again.

However, the Reds are likely to be meet very reluctant sellers with any approach, with the Magpies’ PSR issues a thing of the past.

Newcastle were in dire straights last summer when they were eventually forced to sell both Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Hove Albion, and homegrown talent Elliot Anderson to now Champions League rivals Nottingham Forest. As part of that mad dash before the June 30 PSR completability deadline, Anthony Gordon was floated as a potential exit, with talks between Liverpool and the Magpies taking place while he was away with England at the Euros.

Liverpool transfers: Gordon in, Diaz and Nunez out?

Nothing, of course, came to pass from those talks, as United satisfied their needs in avoiding a Premier League points deduction by departing with Minteh and Anderson, but the dangling carrot of a return to boyhood heroes Liverpool was shown to be there. And NewcastleWorld understands Arne Slot remains a big fan of the player and sees Gordon as the perfect fit in his summer post-title win rebuild, which is likely to see the exit of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.

Gordon only signed a new Magpies deal in October 2024, a reward for his elevated status in the Magpies’ line up, as well as breaking on to the international scene. So from that perspective, Newcastle have no need to consider selling a player seen by Eddie Howe as integral to the way that he wants his team to play.

Newcastle transfers: no pressure to sell

In fact, Howe has already spoken about Newcastle’s want to add, not take away from his Carabao Cup-winning, second place-chasing Magpies squad, despite constant exit links for the likes of Alexander Isak, Gordon and Sandro Tonali. Talking to the media on Friday, ahead of the clash with Arsenal in the Premier League this Sunday, Howe said: “Regular success, consistent success, all these things help you in the journey that you're on to show to everybody that that's where the club's ambition is.

"There's no doubt that's what the club's ambition is. But of course, as we've said many times, the ability financially to compete the last few years has been hampered by PSR, but those issues aren't there for the coming window. So I don't see any reason why we can't strengthen, not weaken ourselves."

Anthony Gordon: ‘Difficult challenges’

Whether the interest from Liverpool would be enough to turn the head of the player is really yet to be known, but his effort and commitment in a black and white shirt can never be faulted, even if he hasn’t quite hit the heights of last season, this one.

Howe continued: “Yeah, I think Anthony's sort of got that focus and the ability to raise his game for the big occasion, which is a great thing for any player to have. It's also a challenge to be consistent in every kind of game. I also think he has the ability to do that as well... I think he's got that strength of character to know when he needs to deliver.

“I think he's had a lot of difficult challenges thrown at him this year, none more so than the summer he had last year, which was, I think, difficult on the international stage. Probably for the first time in his career, well, maybe not the first time, second or third time, that he's had to deal with a lot of media speculation. And that's something you can never know how you're going to react to.

“I'd say on the pitch, we probably haven't seen him at his absolute fluent best. Consistently enough, he's had some very, very good games that maybe not had the run of games that he had the previous season. But he's still fundamentally a very important player for us. And he has the ability to be whatever he wants to be at the age that he is. So I can only see great things ahead.”
